2025 Perioperative Medicine Short Course

Why do the course

Surgical Patients are getting older and sicker and many clinicians caring for surgical patients are challenged by the growing complexity of these patients, particularly their perioperative management. Pre-admission clinics are responding, and perioperative medicine is becoming an emerging field and this course will address deficiencies in this area.

• August Course: 18 August to 7 November 2025

Course objectives

• Consolidate and extend the scientific knowledge, skill-base and professional attributes required to underpin the delivery of excellent, evidencee based clinical practice in the field of perioperative medicine.
• Develop a cohort of graduates who are well-equipped to lead the implementation of high quality and safe practice in perioperative medicine into the future.
• Provide a solid intellectual basis for the development of perioperative medicine as an academic discipline and professional speciality.
• Support and promote the development of skilled practitioners capable of delivering best-practice perioperative medicine in all clinical contexts including remote and rural clinical practice.
• Contribute to the evidence-base of knowledge in perioperative medicine by the distillation, implementation or conduct of clinically relevant research.
• Develop a thorough understanding of the cost benefits of excellent perioperative care.
• Equip practitioners to analyse, and manage professional components of clinical practice in perioperative care including ethical and moral dilemmas.

Information

• 12 week course.
• 12 course modules (one released each week).
• Additional 5 weeks catch-up will be provided at the of the 12 weeks.
• Each course module consists with a reading package, journal articles, short videos, podcasts and knowledge check sections or combinations.
• Course material is online with no face-to-face interaction with lecturers or course coordinators (unless for the single Block Day session).
• Allows for flexibility in work patterns – course modules can be viewed at own pace (once released) and at any time.
• You can download the Certificate of Completion at the end of the course if you have accessed and completed all the course modules and the final course survey.

Time Commitment:

Online Only Course: 12 Course Modules (one released each week), 4 - 6 hours per week (on average)

Block Day contact hours: 7.35 hrs (if you select the Online PLUS Block Day course)

The Online Only course and Online PLUS Block Day course

Anyone who is interested in Perioperative Medicine with a minimum Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) can register for this course.

However, we recommend participation is best suited for the following specialties

•  General Practitioners

Online Only course

• There are 12 course modules (one released each week) which are reviewed Online.
• Additional 5 weeks catch-up time will be provided at the end of 12 weeks.

Online PLUS Block Day course

• In addition to the Online Only course, the Block Day is included (additional fee applies).
• The Perioperative Medicine Short course Block Day is a single day to interact with specialists in the field of perioperative medicine. We provide an opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in the online course to case studies and introduce other important areas in Perioperative Medicine.
• We are delighted to welcome a very experienced faculty to provide high quality sessions.
• All catering is provided including an on-site barista.

Note: The Block Day is open for all registrants and cannot be booked separately.

In addition to the Online Only course, the Block Day is included (additional fee applies).

What is included on the day?

• Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea are included as well as an all-day complimentary barista.
• Parking and transport is NOT included.

The Block Day is conducted over 9 hours from approximately 8 AM till 5 PM.
Students are divided into small groups (between 10 and 14) and rotate through the case studies.
Typically there are 6 rotations of approximately an hour each.
